Slicing Mammals at the Hunt

  And with amazing strategies.

Young adopted Jaguar.

Image
Gets the soft mouth treatment from Mom. For some Mexicans the Jaguar is an amazing spiritual standby. Bringing good omens. Terrifying saga of an illegal border crossing in the parching compartment of a tanker truck...gone bitterly wrong. Latterly a Jaguar plays his part in rescue, as per legend. Tension-filled narrative…. With superb minor characters like Don Serafín…and Hector’s abuelo, …Hector’s reflections on Oaxacan culture fascinate. Vaillant writes with power and emotion, affection and respect for the Zapotec people and lands, a fertile place, where ‘the corn made possible everything we do and are,’ now imperiled by international agribusiness. An eloquent literary dissection of the divide between the United States and Mexico.” — Kirkus Reviews  (starred review)

Up to Beaver Valley and Hoggs Falls

Image
An early autumn drive up Highways 6 and 4. Ever present wild purple Astors.  Alongside miles of split rail fence. Love the feel and smell of cedar stands. https://naturesode.blogspot.com/2022/06/of-pines-and-cedar.html An Ebook including favoured poem Into the Cedars. Along the trail you can hear the Falls happily calling. A mere twenty two feet high approx. but worth the walk. Take it alone and listen and smell. Once saw a fly fisherman below it, having a blast. An overcast day added some more intense colour and drama. Simply moaned low and loud. Bossy came over for the shot. Junior learns some of the Ropes for apple picking. Big curious happy crowd Hilary chats with hospitable staff. Delightful Country Market and apple orchards just south of Clarksburg on County Road 13. Then drive south through Kimberley and Eugenia to Highway 4. Look for FARMERS’ PANTRY AND ORCHARDS.

Do you see him? Wow.

Hoggs Falls near Flesherton ON.

Beautiful day years back, driving up and down the Beaver River Valley. Photo opps galore. Bright blue skies. Distant green carpet of fields  coming down the Hills on opposite side of Valley. Through Kimberley and up to Thornbury on Georgian Bay. Apple orchards and honey and market treats everywhere. Below the falls a guy was fly fishing. Large smiles exchanged.

Chief Joseph of the Real People (the Nez Perce)

Image
I have read of The mindful retreat of Younger Chief Joseph Of the Nez Perce Before Howard, Sturgis And Miles, the one with The crazed, vain bravado Of a Custer. Many the engagement Where stealth and patience And courage of young Braves' hearts Bloodied and ripped blue coats. Seized the scatter guns of terror. Left horsemeat a-plenty For the scavengers. And men wasted At the caprice of Others up the chain. Finally a tight, flat lower place Beside the mountains. Becoming a strategy For withstanding in camp. But also a box unkind  In winter for siege. Hunger, numbness,  Silent frozen departures. Miles waited Wanting the glory Before Howard rejoined. Getting that Glory With Howard present and  Conceding. Horseback, Chief Joseph Approaches, head bowed Gray blanket over shoulder Steps down. Then gray cowl-like over head. Spit rifle extended straight arms But no longer as weapon Rather as peace-offered trophy. Miles makes promises. One-armed Howard revels in relief,  Hard earned. * Jose
